Integral Active Steering
A new, flowing driving feeling. More agility and stability in every situation. Rear wheels that help to turn up to a maximum of three degrees – a small movement with large effects.
Whether in tight bends or in a car park, Integral Active Steering makes steering easier. Under 60 km/h, the front and rear wheels steer in opposing directions to reduce the turning circle and ensure every bend is taken with precision.
Above 80 km/h the front and rear wheels turn in the same direction to ensure an extremely comfortable and superior response on the road when changing lanes.
With Integral Active Steering, the driver and passengers in the BMW 5 Series Sedan experience a relaxed journey with increased comfort. Fast, flowing changes in direction, sharp bends, simple parking – enjoy steering that actively supports your driving pleasure.

Eigh-Speed Automatic Transmission Steptronic
The most comfortable way to save: the eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic not only ensures incredibly soft changes and reduces background noise at high speeds, it also significantly reduces fuel consumption.
Only the tachometer will reveal how fast and seamlessly the new eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic shifts gears. The additional gears reduce the engine’s rev interval between shifts, so the transmission process is barely noticeable. At the same time, the engine is always held at the performance level at which it can optimally utilise its strength and efficiency.
The eighth gear reduces the number of revolutions at high speeds, tangibly increasing comfort while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The system is supported by the newly developed and more efficient converter clutch – even if you use the electronic gearshift lever to change gear manually.

If a vehicle doesn’t look dynamic how are we supposed to believe that it drives dynamically? You have to be able to both see and feel its character. It’s the same with talent. It’s not enough just to have it, you have to be able to use it.” Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design
Interior 2010 bmw 5 Series Sedan Design
“In the interior dynamics and elegance are represented in one flowing movement from the instrument panel to the door. This can instantly be felt. All of the high-quality control elements are ergonomically positioned for a perfect fit as soon as you take a seat.” Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group Design
Break Energy Regeneration
Until now, braking meant losing energy. Brake Energy Regeneration puts an end to this by winning energy back during braking to charge the battery.
As soon as the driver takes their foot off the accelerator the generator is engaged and converts excess kinetic energy into electrical energy. Once the battery is fully charged, the generator is disengaged from the engine. This unburdens the engine and reduces emissions. Fuel consumption savings means that there is more power available for acceleration.
